Experiencing a breakup or divorce? Our mascot, Magnus the Cat, has some tips for making sure your pets stay safe and healthy during and after the transition. Your animal companions are more than property to be divided, they're family. And like any family members, they are affected by the changes in the family going on. They can sense your distress and feel some of their own, and here are tips to make it easier on your pets.

1

Tip #1: Not All Landlord Takes Pets

As you're thinking about setting up a second home and separating, consider that not all landlords take pets. If one of you is staying the family home, consider letting your pet stay in the home.

2

Tip #2: Please Don't Leave Your Pets Alone

We know you have a lot going on, and you may be really busy. But don't leave pets home alone for long periods of time. During the pandemic, your pets got used to humans being around. If you have to be away for a long stretch, let a friend or neighbor visit for a while to keep them company.

3

Tip #3: Provide Toys, Food, and Water

Make sure your pet has lots of water, a bowl food of kibble, and know that a few toys or catnip would not go unappreciated.

4

Tip #4: Consider Letting Pets Stay with Their Primary Human

Consider letting your pet stay with their primary human if possible. Like you, they need attentiona nd affection, so make sure they are with the human most likely to give it.

Tip #5: Keep Pets Safe from Violence

If you've been in a home with violence, then remember that cruelty to pets is the way that some people get back at others. If possible, ensure that your pet is somewhere safe from violence.

6

Tip #6: Watch for Signs of Distress

Take some time to hang out with your pet. Not only will they benefit your health and well-being, but your time with them will monitor them for signs of distress or illness. Warning signs are losing interest in food or pulling out their fur.

Worried about Keeping Your Beloved Pet with You?
