Video 2: About the Legal Orientation

If you're like many people in or facing a family law case, this may be your first time hiring or consulting with a lawyer. Or this may be the most personal case for which you've met a lawyer: your children, home, financial security and/or hopes and dreams seem to be on the line.  It can be overwhelming.  We've developed a workshop called the Legal Orientation to help you start the process. You can choose a live, guided orientation (in which you will have a 1:1 zoom attorney appointment OR you can take the "on-demand" (pre-recorded on line course)  legal orientation.

The Legal Orientation

The Legal Orientation will clarify the Oregon family law process so you are empowered with knowledge about the process, your options and ways to manage your case, including the steps, complexity, stress and cost.

In both the On-Demand and Guided Orientations:

  • We'll walk you through the law surrounding the main issues in your case and  explain the legal process;
  • As part of that process, we will explain your choices about how to resolve your case
  • We'll discuss the importance of setting goals so you have an anchor as you go through the process to keep you on track
  • We'll explain the different ways we can work with you including our services and tools you can use.
  • We will review with you the next steps for each option to move your case forward whichever one you choose.
  • Finally, you'll get a personalized Legal Orientation Workbook covering the legal topics affecting you, our recommended next steps, and worksheets to get you started.
  • If you opt for the guided orientation,  we'll give you our expert opinion about potential outcomes and the likelihood of getting the results you are seeking.

You'll leave your Legal Orientation well-informed about the legal process and how it affects you and your family. You will understand the range of legal options and be clear on the next actionable next step you can take to advance your case.

And finally, and most importantly, you will leave equipped with the knowledge you need to make informed decisions, find the tools you need and move forward with more confidence and clarity no matter which path you choose.

"I felt less overwhelmed and more confident in the undertaking."

Samantha was incredibly helpful throughout my entire divorce process. She conducted a Legal Orientation with me to help me understand that entire process before even initiating the Divorce Conversation.

I felt less overwhelmed and more confident in the undertaking. She listened, heard, understood and remembered my situation each time we spoke. She met with me at my pace throughtout the process and at every stage gave me incredibly helpful advice, tailored to my unique situation and always held the intention of keeping my divorce out of court.

She is a clear, direct and compassionate communicator and guided me well through this life altering transition. I am so grateful and have recommended her to several women seeking to successfully and peacefully complete their divorce.

The Legal Orientation Helps You When. . .

You're just starting your family legal journey

At this stage, you're considering your options and looking for direction and help; whether to start a case or respond to one.

The Legal Orientation gives you the big picture information about Oregon family law, including the 6 phases of the court process, our "PEACE" methodology, and different ways you can save money, time, and heartache in the long run.

You're shopping for lawyers and want to pick the best one

You wouldn't hire a contractor for your home or a mechanic for your car without asking them about their

  • experience
  • qualifications
  • approach
  • record of successes

Part of the Legal Orientation will involve questions you can and should ask to evaluate both the WHO and the HOW of resolving your family law issue. Find the best  legal choice for your situation --whether that is a lawyer, a process or a combination of the two.

You want a second opinion about your legal options

You wouldn't get surgery without getting a second opinion, so why do it with something as serious as your family law case?

We start our Legal Orientation with information and  our opinion, but we are happy to help you analyze and understand what you have learned already.

Whether you have done a first consult or have read up on family law on your own, we can help you sift through this information so you are clear on your legal options, likely outcomes and next steps to move your situation to a resolution.

Many clients have told us that they have left paid legal consults with too little information about the issues, costs and likely outcomes.

Unfortunately, people aren’t usually told about the different ways in which they can work with an attorney or the different approaches they can take to resolve their family law issues without going to court.

Instead, they get the equivalent of a one-hour sales pitch to convince them to hand over a $5,000 retainer and sign a contract agreeing to pay unspecified monthly bills for an unspecified time.

We built the attorney-facilitated Oregon Legal Orientation to give litigants a different path forward: a path which educates you and empowers you to succeed, even if you do eventually hire a local lawyer to go to court.
